Halloween Horrors

Tutors Nicholas Royle and Tom Fletcher, who between them have published dozens of short horror stories, will explore the form and the genre and discuss some of the methods and techniques that writers have used to unsettle and frighten even the most level-headed of readers. Mornings will be filled with exercise-based workshops, while the afternoons will be given over to one-to-one tutorials, for which participants may, if they wish, submit work in advance. The guest reader, on Halloween, is Lisa Tuttle.

Nicholas Royle is the author of First Novel, as well as six earlier novels, and three volumes of short fiction, Mortality, In Camera, and Ornithology. He has edited twenty anthologies and is series editor of Best British Short Stories. A senior lecturer in creative writing at the Manchester Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University, he also runs Nightjar Press, publishing individual short stories, signed and in limited editions, in chapbook format.

Tom Fletcher was born in 1984 and currently lives in Cumbria. He is the author of five novels – The Leaping, The Thing on the Shore, The Ravenglass Eye, Gleam, and Idle Hands – as well as numerous short stories.

Lisa Tuttle is an award-winning author of science fiction, fantasy and horror stories and novels.  Her most recent books are set in 1890s England, detective novels with supernatural elements:  The Curious Affair of the Somnambulist and the Psychic Thief and The Curious Affair of the Witch at Wayside Cross.  She has also written for children, and her non-fiction includes Encyclopedia of Feminism. Born and raised in Texas, she has lived in Scotland for the past three decades.

Unfortunately, Ramsey Campbell, who was originally the guest on this course, isn’t able to make it. We’re delighted that Lisa will be joining us in his place.

On this course, tutors will read a sample of your work ahead of time to get a feel for your work. Details of how and when to submit this will be sent to you in the course notes upon booking.
