The Balancing Act
The talented duo of Debi Gliori and Mairi Hedderwick will guide you on the picture book tightrope of balancing words with illustrations. On our first ever course on this specialised genre in children’s literature your tutors, who both write and illustrate their own books, will guide you through the process, with analysis of examples, historical and contemporary, ethical and trail blazing, based on their own experiences in this particular field of publishing. At least one limbering up exercise a day is on the schedule and definitely a bedtime story each night.
A graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, Mairi Hedderwick is the author, illustrator and creator of Katie Morag, first published in 1984. Katie Morag joined Cbeebies in 2013 with the successful TV drama series produced by Move On Up. Mairi has also written and illustrated many other books for children and adults, all with the backdrop of the Highlands and Islands. She was awarded an Honorary Degree from Stirling University in 2003 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to writing and illustration in Scotland, a Fellowship of FRIAS in 2016 and a further Honorary Degree from Edinburgh University in 2018. Her illustrated adult books are An Eye on the Hebrides, Highland Journey, Sea Change, and Shetland Rambles.
In a career spanning over 20 years, the award-winning Debi Gliori has written and illustrated more than 80 books for children of all ages. Debi is the author and illustrator of many Bloomsbury picture books including the Alfie series, The Trouble with Dragons, Dragon Love Penguin and the best-selling No Matter What. She has sold more than half a million books in the UK alone. Debi lives in East Lothian with her family.
Jonathan Meres is a former merchant seaman, ice cream van driver and Perrier Award-nominated stand-up comedian. As an actor he’s appeared on TV and in movies. As a writer he’s written for TV and radio, but is best known for being the author of over 30 books for children, including the best-selling, award-winning World Of Norm series, which has so far been translated into 16 languages worldwide. Jonathan’s hugely entertaining live performances ensure that he’s in constant demand at schools and book festivals throughout the UK and beyond. He has no cats.
Students are requested to bring a couple of picture books that have meaning for them. Basic art materials will be provided but students most welcome to bring their own materials.
