Private Writing Retreats

Whilst we cannot provide public residential courses and retreats, we are making the main house and cottage available at Moniack Mhor for private retreats for writers’ and their families. The Centre comprises the main house (a converted steading), the cottage (a traditional croft house), the straw bale studio and an extensive garden. With panoramic views taking in Glen Strathfarrar, Glen Convinth, Ben Wyvis and beyond, Moniack Mhor provides an inspirational setting to progress your writing.  The surrounding natural environment offers an invigorating backdrop for exercise as well as peaceful relaxation. The buildings can be rented separately or booked together, providing dedicated space to focus on your work.

During your stay with us in either the House or Cottage, we can arrange an online one-to-one mentoring session or group workshop with a tutor. Catering options may also be available. Please just ask us for more details and we will do as much as we can to make your stay productive and nurturing.

The House

The main house, a cosy converted steading, provides simple yet comfortable accommodation on two floors. It has nine single rooms and a downstairs twin room, each with a writing desk. There is also one en-suite available upstairs. Most bedrooms provide an expansive view of the landscape. There are four bathrooms, two on the ground floor, including a wheelchair-accessible wet room. The sitting room boasts a large table and couches for relaxing by the fire in an evening. Upstairs, there is a fiction library and wifi is available throughout the building. Our private writing retreats are self-catering and a fully functioning farm kitchen including a modern electric range, dishwasher, urn, microwave, and toaster is available for your stay.

The main house is available for 1 writer and their household.

Moniack Mhor staff are on site during office hours and the garden can be accessed, unless it’s in use for our young writers’ programme.

Price per retreat – Monday (lunch time arrival) – Sunday (10am departure) – £700. Bursaries available.

Please email info@moniackmhor.org.uk to book your private retreat in the main house.

The Straw Bale Studio

Our eco-friendly straw bale studio can be available to rent alongside a retreat in the cottage or main house for £50 per week. It makes for the perfect space for undisturbed writing and offers beautiful views across the hills of Strathfarrar. It contains a wood burning stove and has environmental sustainability at its heart: using a passive solar heating system, solar-powered electricity, turf roofing and straw bale insulation.
