2020 HIGHLAND BOOK PRIZE LONGLIST SERIES: ONLINE LIVE READING WITH ROBIN ROBERTSON

Date/Time
Date(s) - Thu 25th Feb, 2021
7:00pm - 8:00pm

The 2020 Highland Book Prize Longlist series: Grimoire – Online Reading with poet Robin Robertson

Robin Robertson – a Scot exiled in London for most of his life – will explain how this Grimoire came to be, and why it’s subtitled New Scottish Folk Tales. Primarily, though, this will be a chance to hear him reading these poems.

Robin Robertson is originally from the north-east coast of Scotland. His previous book, The Long Take (2018), won the Goldsmiths Prize for innovative fiction, the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction, and was the first poem to be shortlisted for the Booker Prize.

‘I’ve long admired Robin Robertson’s narrative gift… If you love stories, you will love this book.’ Val McDermid

‘Magic and malign forces weave eerily through this slim volume of “New Scottish Folk Tales” by the distinguished poet, whose 2018 verse-novel, The Long Take, was Booker-shortlisted. Here, he deploys Scots, Gaelic and English, distilling the spirit of vanished peoples who spoke freely of the selkies, changelings and shapeshifters that populate these beautiful poems. Evocatively illustrated by the author’s brother, Tim Robertson, Grimoire is the perfect fireside companion for winter nights.’ Herald

‘Superb… Robin Robertson’s spirit-haunted Grimoire demonstrates how much poetry matters even in the most terrible of times.’ John Banville, Irish Times Best Books of 2020
