Adapting from stage to screen with Mark Rosenblatt

How do you begin to approach transforming stage plays for cinema? How do you take the very specific experience of watching a play and its frequently non-naturalistic conventions, and tell that same story in a more visual medium? Adaptation means resilience and survival in a changed environment. How do you ensure that what lies at the heart of the original survives, even if its form needs reimagining? 

 Using a sample text to stimulate a wider conversation, his own experience as a writer, as well as referencing work by other filmmakers, Mark’s practical workshop will offer some useful insights into the process.  

Mark has adapted 5 plays for screen - most recently co-writing MAKING NOISE QUIETLY based on Robert Holman’s acclaimed stage play of the same name, directed by Dominic Dromgoole and starring Deborah Findlay, and released in UK cinemas in 2019;  two short Shakespeare films for BFI and Shakespeare’s Globe, adapted from Anthony & Cleopatra and Henry VIII and shot on location in Cairo and Hampton Court respectively; and he has two screenplays in development, adapted from plays by Somerset Maugham .
