How does place write to us and how might we write in place?

In this course we will practice being in, attending to and writing about place in poetry and prose. We will consider bodily movement and stillness, the location of the mind that thinks and the hand that writes and the sensations of presence. We will attend to and converse with the other occupants of our places, past, present and future and explore different ways in which language can respond to experience. We will be working towards a geo-consciousness in our writing, always making experiments and devoted to serious play.

Sarah Moss is the author of eight novels, including The Fell, Summerwater and Ghost Wall. She was born in Glasgow, grew up in Manchester and studied at Oxford. She now lives in Dublin and teaches Creative Writing on the MA and MFA at UCD.

Alyson Hallett is a prize-winning poet whose work has been carved into pavements and boulders and etched into windows, as well as published in more than 12 books. Essays, drama and an audio diary have been broadcast on Radio 3 and 4. Her focus on collaboration has resulted in work with visual artists, composers, scientists, rocks, dancers, sculptors and writers. Since 2001 she has curated the international poetry and public art project, The Migration Habits of Stones. Her latest Fellowship was in the Earth Sciences department of Bristol University. This resulted in an exhibition of poetry, meteorites and maps. www.thestonelibrary.com  www.alysonhallett.com
