As part of Moniack Mhor’s 30th anniversary celebrations this year, we have launched a series of online masterclasses taught by respected writers and tutors, many of whom have long histories with Moniack Mhor. Whether you’re new to writing, polishing your umpteenth draft, or simply want to try a taster of a different style, form, or genre, we’re confident you’ll enjoy and be inspired by these focused shorter sessions. All hosted by Moniack Mhor on Zoom Pro, usually with an opportunity to ask questions at the end. More of these to come during 2023-24 – we’ll keep you posted! Meanwhile, enjoy …
Voices from the past: creating authentic and compelling character and setting in historical fiction
Historical fiction brings the past to life, telling new stories from old. But how do we write in a way that is true to the period while being urgent and relevant to today’s reader?
In this workshop Sean Lusk will cover how to do your research; how to write real historical characters in new ways; how to invent credible new characters to walk alongside them; and discuss how to make language and tone convincing yet fresh. The masterclass will include tips, tools, and techniques, highlighting pitfalls to avoid, and include some short exercises, discussion, and Q&A.
Sean Lusk’s short stories have won the Manchester Fiction Prize, the Fish short story prize and been runner-up in the Bridport and Tom-Gallon Trust prizes. His debut novel, The Second Sight of Zachary Cloudesley (Doubleday/Penguin, 2022) was shortlisted for the Saltire Prize debut of the year and longlisted for the Walter Scott Prize. He has lived in Greece, Pakistan and Egypt, working variously as a gardener, speechwriter and diplomatic official. He now lives near Forres in Moray, Scotland.
