Dramatic Writing for Stage

An active interrogation of the mechanics of playwriting, this course will creatively examine the use of dramatic action, character, location, narrative and structure in the making of a play. This course is useful both for playwrights at the beginning of their career and for writers who have written one or two plays and are looking to develop their craft.

Tutors

For more than twenty years Simon Stephens’ work has been widely translated and produced throughout the world. He has won many awards including Olivier and Tony Awards for new plays. He has written new English language versions of masterpieces by Chekhov, Ibsen and Brecht and adaptations of novels by Mark Haddon and Jose Saramago. He has collaborated with the world’s leading theatre practitioners (Andrew Scott, Patrice Chereau, Ivo Van Hove, Marianne Elliott, Katie Mitchell) and produced original work throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas. He is a Professor at the Writing School of Manchester Metropolitan University.

Cordelia Lynn is a playwright, librettist and dramaturg whose work has been produced in the UK and abroad. She received the Berwin Lee Award 2020 for Love and Other Acts of Violence (Donmar Warehouse) and the Harold Pinter Award 2017 for One for Sorrow (Royal Court). Her play Witch Play has been shortlisted for the George Devine Award 2023. Her opera with composer Sivan Eldar, Like Flesh (Opera National de Lille) won the Fedora Opera Prize, 2021. Her piece with composer Laura Bowler, Houses Slide (London Sinfonietta), was nominated for an Ivor Award 2022. Cordelia is a MacDowell Fellow.
