As part of Moniack Mhor’s 30th anniversary celebrations in 2023, we launched a series of online masterclasses taught by respected writers and tutors, many of whom have long histories with Moniack Mhor. Whether you’re new to writing, polishing your umpteenth draft, or simply want to try a taster of a different style, form, or genre, we’re confident you’ll enjoy and be inspired by these focused shorter sessions. How to Shape a Poem
In this 2-hour masterclass, poet and writer Gerda Stevenson will help you craft and shape your own poems, offering tips on being specific, whether you’re drawing on your own experience to write about what you know or employing research to write in voices other than your own. We’ll pay attention to sound, rhythm and line-endings, as well as considering drafting and redrafting poems. Includes writing exercises and a short Q&A.
Tutor
Gerda Stevenson is an award-winning writer, actor, director and singer-songwriter, working in theatre, television, opera, radio and film throughout the UK and abroad. Her play, Federer Versus Murray, toured to New York, sponsored by the Scottish Government, and her first two poetry collections, If This Were Real, and Quines: Poems in Tribute to Women of Scotland, have also been published in Rome in Italian translations. Other publications include a book of short stories, Letting Go, and a third poetry collection, Tomorrow’s Feast. She was nominated as Scots Singer of the Year for her album of songs, Night Touches Day. The founder of Scotland’s leading women’s theatre company STELLAR QUINES, she has directed and appeared in many theatre productions and films, including Braveheart, winning a BAFTA for her performance in Margaret Tait’s feature film Blue Black Permanent. www.gerdastevenson.co.uk
