First Stages Masterclass with Romeo Stodart and Michele Stodart

Romeo and Michele Stodart of The Magic Numbers join forces to share part of their process with songwriting. This three hour online session will dive into the importance of hooks, harmony, melodic phrases, inner rhymes and the power of call and response. The Magic Numbers have recently celebrated their 20th Anniversary as a band. They have had worldwide success with their records and multiple top ten singles over the years, and have always been much-loved by other bands and songwriters in the industry. We at Moniack are delighted to have Romeo and Michele Stodart as part of our First Stages Online Programme supporting and nurturing young and emerging songwriters.

Tutors

Romeo Stodart is the lead singer/songwriter in the London-based rock n roll harmony group, The Magic Numbers. The band comprising two pairs of brothers and sisters have released five critically acclaimed albums thus far, including the self-titled Mercury Music Prize nominated, Double-Platinum selling debut. Alongside The Magic Numbers, Romeo has collaborated with a vast array of artists, including writing songs for & with the late Jane Birkin, Edwyn Collins, Amadou & Mariam and The Chemical Brothers. He has contributed his unique guitar playing style to various projects, including Damon Albarn’s Africa Express collective. He’s been producing other artists of late, notably Ren Harvieu, Kathryn Williams and Billy Bragg’s most recent album, as well as co-writing and producing songs from Natalie Imbruglia’s latest top 10 record ‘Firebird’.

Michele Stodart is a multi-award-winning singer-songwriter, producer, and musical director and bassist, vocalist and co-songwriter in The Magic Numbers. The band has supported the likes of Neil Young, Radiohead, Brian Wilson, U2, The Who, Flaming Lips and Bright Eyes. Michele has also built a name for herself outside of the band releasing three critically acclaimed solo albums, her latest ‘Invitation’ won ‘Album of the Year’ at the 2024 UK Americana Awards, where she also took home the coveted award for ‘Artist of The Year’. Her diverse skills have led to many collaborative projects on stage and in the studio with many artists, including Martha Wainwright, Candi Staton, Allison Russell, Judy Collins, Rachel Sermanni and many more. Michele will be spending this year collaborating, writing and producing lots of new music. She has been working with Moniack Mhor as a tutor for many years now.

First Stages

First Stages is part of The Scottish Government’s Youth Music Initiative (YMI) which is administered by Creative Scotland. The YMI creates access to high quality music making opportunities, enables young people to achieve their potential in or through music and supports the development of the sector for the benefit of young people.

This event is for anyone aged 16-25 (up to 30 if you have lived experience of the care system) who is interested in songwriting and experiences isolation or have less access to making songs. By signing up, you acknowledge that you are eligible.
