Session 4: Post-Publication

Publication day is approaching; what happens now that your book is going to be out in the world? In the fourth session of the week, poet, playwright and performer Hannah Lavery will lead the discussion around navigating expectations and activity once your book has been published. She will be joined by founder of Argonaut Books, Adam Barclay; Communications Director at Canongate, Anna Frame; and poet and StAnza Artistic Director, Ryan Van Winkle.

About the Panel

Hannah Lavery is a Scottish poet and playwright. She was appointed Edinburgh Makar (or poet laureate) in November 2021 for a three-year term. She was also selected by Owen Sheers as one of his Ten Writers Asking Questions That Will Shape Our Future for the International Literature Showcase, a project from the National Writing Centre and the British Council in 2020. She won a Leadership Award from Creative Edinburgh for her work with Writers of Colour and her curated film poetry series Sorry I am on Mute for Fringe of Colour. In 2022, she launched with Scottish Feminist Theatre Company, Stellar Quines, a feminist arts podcast called Quines Cast, which she co-hosts with Caitlin Skinner. https://www.hannahlavery.com/

Adam Barclay has been a bookseller for over ten years, working for Waterstones and Blackwells, and was previously the Booksales & Logistics Manager for the Edinburgh International Book Festival. He is the owner/manager of Leith’s Argonaut Books which has just celebrated its two-year anniversary! https://argonautbooks.co.uk/

 

 

Anna Frame is Communications Director at Canongate Books. An award-winning publicist with more than 15 years’ experience, she has run a wide variety of campaigns and events across almost every genre, with career highlights including Amy Liptrot’s The Outrun, Travis Alabanza’s None of the Above, Nick Cave and Sean O’Hagan’s Faith, Hope and Carnage, and Ruth Ozeki’s Women’s Prize-winning The Book of Form and Emptiness. She is also the Chair of the Publishers’ Publicity Circle, a recipient of the Booksellers’ Association Sophie Christopher Publicist of the Year award, and a Trustee of the Edinburgh International Book Festival. The publicity team she manages pride themselves on promoting Canongate’s titles creatively, collaboratively and effectively, with campaigns that put author care at their heart. https://canongate.co.uk/

Ryan Van Winkle is an award-winning author, artist and producer based in Edinburgh. He is currently the Artistic Director of StAnza: Scotland’s International Poetry Festival. He has been Writer in Residence at the University of Edinburgh, the Citizen Schools Writer in Residence at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, and the Reader in Residence at the Scottish Poetry Library. His second poetry collection, The Good Dark, won the Saltire Society’s 2015 Poetry Book of the Year award. His poems have appeared in The American Poetry Review, Modern Poetry in Translation and New Writing Scotland. He was awarded the Jessie Kesson fellowship at Moniack Mhor in 2018. https://www.ryanvanwinkle.com/
