Writing Poems

An intensive but very enjoyable course of writing and reading with ‘the best poetry teachers in the world’ (The Guardian).  Taking classic and contemporary poems as model and stimulus, we will create perhaps as much as a small pamphlet in just one week.  Insightful editorials, informal discussion and entertaining evening reading sessions will make this a truly memorable course.

Writers are invited to submit two poems in advance to compare with work produced during the course, so as to consider and develop writing practice.

Ann Sansom’s books include Romance and In Praise of Men & Other People (Bloodaxe).

She has been visiting poet at Leeds and Sheffield Hallam universities and guest poet at the Times Educational Supplement.

Peter Sansom’s books include a Selected Poems and Careful What You Wish For (Carcanet).

He has taught poetry at Leeds and Manchester universities and been company poet with M&S.

Ann and Peter are Co-Directors of the Poetry Business in Sheffield, and editors of The North magazine and Smith|Doorstop Books.

Roseanne Watt is a writer, filmmaker and musician from Shetland. Her dual-language debut collection, Moder Dy, was published by Polygon in May 2019, after receiving the prestigious Edwin Morgan Poetry Award for Scottish poets under 30. Moder Dy subsequently received both an Eric Gregory and Somerset Maugham Award in 2020, and was named joint-winner of the Highland Book Prize 2019.
