Get Your Prose in Shape While Giving it Weight

This course will offer guidance to help you get your stories up to scratch. Workshops with Nuala and Cynan will look at crucial aspects of short form writing, like titles, openings, concision, and detail; while one-to-one clinics will focus on your specific project(s). Whether you favour rich language or stark prose, we’ll examine how to carry readers through the world of your story, what choices to make, and things to avoid. This is a great chance for both seasoned short story writers and those new to the form to evaluate your work in stunning surroundings, and raise the bar.

Cynan Jones is the author of five novels, numerous short stories, and a collection of tales for children. His work is published in 20 or so countries and has won prizes including the Wales Book of the Year Fiction Prize and the BBC National Short Story Award. He has written for radio and television, and work has appeared in anthologies, newspapers, and magazines including Granta and The New Yorker.

Nuala O’Connor was born in Dublin, Ireland, and lives in East Galway. Her fifth short story collection Joyride to Jupiter was published to critical acclaim by New Island in 2017; her story ‘Gooseen’ won the UK’s 2018 Short Fiction Prize and was published in Granta. Nuala’s fourth novel, Becoming Belle, is published in September 2018. www.nualaoconnor.com

Bernard MacLaverty was born in Belfast but now lives in Glasgow. He has written five books of short stories (most of which are in his Collected Short Stories) and five novels – Lamb, Cal, Grace Notes (shortlisted for the Booker
Prize), The Anatomy School and Midwinter Break (Irish Novel of the Year 2017, Sunday Herald Scottish Culture Awards 2018 Best Writer). He has written versions of his fiction for other media – radio and television plays, libretti and screenplays.
