Poet and Writer Leyla Josephine will lead the Young Writers’ Café for young people in Inverness and surrounding areas in May.

 

Writing Self – Join Leyla Josephine to explore how your own identity and real life experiences can influence your writing within fiction or autobiographical pieces.

No need for experience, just bring along a playful mind and pen and paper! Drinks and snacks provided.

About the author

Leyla Josephine is a poet, theatre practitioner and filmmaker, originally from Glasgow, now residing in Prestwick. She first started writing poetry in 2013 and won the Hammer and Tongue UK National Slam which catapulted her into the world of Spoken Word.

Her solo theatre shows Hopeless and Daddy Drag have been toured throughout the UK. In 2019 she performed for the First Minister of Scotland and supported John Cooper Clarke on his Scottish tour. She has been on the same bill as the likes of Kae Tempest, Lowkey and Hollie McNish.

Leyla’s new book In Public / In Private will be released November 2022 with Burning Eye Books and she has been mentored by Kim Addonizio.  In Public / In Private examines what share and what we keep secret. Leyla reaches through the pages and asks ‘Have you felt this too?’.

Leyla has extensive experience as a facilitator and project leader working in lots of different social contexts creating poetry and theatre with participants. She was Schools Writer in Residence 2020/21 for Edinburgh International Book Festival.

Her short film Groom was nominated for a Scottish BAFTA and Critics Circle Award. She won Best Director at Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival. She was named a Rising Star by Screen International. She is currently working on her first feature with Short Circuit.

She was named in The List’s Top 100 Artists To Watch in 2019 and 2022.
