What do we mean by isolation or marginalisation?

  • Isolation
    • Isolation is the state of feeling alone and without friends or help
    • It is a feeling of loneliness due to emotional, geographic, economic social or other factors
    • Isolation is something that prevents participation that is not by choice
    • It affects people who are isolated by circumstance or as a cause effect of marginalisation, location and ability. Intersectionality should always be considered in association with isolation as multiple factors can cause a compounded isolation effect
  • Marginalisation
    • To marginalise a group of people means to make them feel isolated and unimportant
    • A community that has been historically discriminated against by society or for political gain, and systemic issues around accessibility. Marginalisation can cause individuals in a group to be isolated and this is where intersectionality comes in.
    • Marginalisation is something that prevents participation that is not by choice
    • People living in the margins in society having fallen in between the cracks or being let down by the system
    • People that have faced limitations based on the system that we live in
