Reading Spaces

As text on the page, a poem consists of two things – the words we use and the spaces between them. During this week, we want to explore being more deliberate about the wordless element of poems – the spaces. What role do they play, what roles can they play, and how can we be intentional about our use of spaces in poetry – whether in terms of form, syntax or pace?

In truth, there is an element of space (or silence) ALWAYS present in poems. This is because language is abstract and all we are ever doing is reaching for words to approximate what we are experiencing so that we can transfer that experience. Given that it is impossible to transfer that experience wholesale, there is forever a silence, a gap that haunts us. How do we exploit that silence, let it work for us, rather than against us?
